Gør-det-selv-piberenser-nisser - DIY Pipe Cleaner Gnomes

Rigtig god weekend!

I was talking about Pipe Cleaner Gnomes a few days ago, and for the ones of you, who don't know, what that is, here it is. Very simple and possible for little fingers to deal with, so the result becomes fun - and it always ends up with everybody participating.

So last Sunday gnomes was made, and also a snow man family. Father Snowman, Mamie Snowman, Big Brother snow man, and Baby-snowman! The total universe of my 3½ year old favorite person :-)

One of these days we are going to make them be able to stand up! And then we are going to place them in a snow landscape!

Have a great weekend!

Jeg er ked af det - og vred! - I am sad - and mad!

I have just seen a tv-ad, which I really don't know how to react to. Should I become sad or mad!

Imagine: Christmas Day, a Christmas tree, a beautifully decorated room with family members, who don't smile. A girl is picking at her nail polish, a father looking seriously (strickty) at her, and there a couple of more blurred persons. Nobody says anything. The father gets up and hands the girl a present. It is a flat iron (I think), and the girl smiles a bit. Ad over, a sign comes on:

"Let the presents talk!!

Hopefully we haven't got to the point, where we cannot show eachother, that we care, and that we are here for the ones we love - without presents on the table!

It is no use to be sad or mad, that we live in a world, where presents (stuff) means more than conversation and a hug.

But I know, that it is us, who have entered that path, and that it is us, who are the only ones, who can change it. So talk and hug! Love cannot be bought!

Den lille detalje - The Small Detail

Sometimes it just takes a small detail to make a nuisance disappear. In this case it was my bag, which always was lying on the floor in the entrance, which is very small.

When I finally addressed the problem, it took 5 minutes to solve!

I vaguely remembered, that I had an old coat hook in the basement, and I had! A very nice brass hook, which was hung - and voila, everything looked much better.

Sometimes it doesn't take a lot to restore order. But sometimes it takes ages to take action - which is just too stupid!

Julekrans - Christmas Wreath

Den er solgt - This is sold

Her er starten - This is the start

Rodet - Messy

Det begynder at ligne noget - Starting to look like something

The end result, which need a bit of correction - It is not easy to tame Nature - fortunately

Yesterday I sold my designer advent candle holder in my process of making my home more me and less design magazine-ish. No criticism of anyone, who loves these things, but as said before I felt, that my home had become more and more impersonal.

So now I wanted to make a decoration, which I didn't have to feel bad about disposing after Christmas, and which will not take up space in my Christmas box.

So I did. Not quite perfect, but absolutely personal :-) and I am quite content with it. It got the thumbs up yesterday, when I had invited the favorite family and my 'daughter' (a beautiful girl, who is the daughter of my best friends) and her boyfriend.

Before dinner we had a good time making pipe cleaner gnomes, which was an activity the 3½ year old favorite person just loved. (probably needs an explanation, but I will show you later - he put everything in a bag and brought it home!).

Jule-overbookning - Don't Overbook Christmas

There are a lot of get-togethers during December.

Especially if you are a family with children. There is a Christmas party in kindergarten, at school, there are events at every sports activity, there are local events, in the city, privately, and then there are something for the grown ups.

If you don't want all this to rule your December, then decide now what you want to participate in. Not what you ought to participate in. Don't feel obligated to participate in everything. The kids go crazy, the grown ups get stressed, and everybody become mentally and psysical exhausted. So be critital. It is all about, how you feel, not pleasing everybody else.

So make a list for what you want to participate in and make a plan for, what you want to do at home, which you can put on the 'free' dates.

It is also a good idea, not to do something every day. Make some days 'ordinary' days to relax. Of course you can have your own little Christmas rituals in the morning and/or at night to celebrate this wonderful month.

Have a great weekend and first Sunday in Advent!

Affald efter en søndagsmiddag - Trash after a Sunday meal

En uges 'samling' - One week's 'collection

Where I live, we are fortunate to have a container space close by, where we can put our metal trash, as well as plastic and cardboard in different containers, which are sent to disposal in a conscious way. And that is nice.

But it only helps very little, because the trash, we put there, already has been produced, and at least for plastic this means, that it will be in our surroundings in some way for thousands of years.

I have become very aware of, especially how much plastic, that comes into my home, even though I don't want it. I have no possibility to shop in small shops, where you can buy food without wrapping of some kind, because none is around, and I don't have a car. I only have a big super market, which means, that I have to buy food packed in the way, it comes.

It is scary, how much trash I 'produce' during a week. Is there anyone out there with good ideas, how to avoid this?

Black Friday! Husk indkøbssedlen - Black Friday! Remember the Shopping List

There are only very few bright spots about Black Friday!

Hello there Friends,

Black Friday is just around the corner, and with that comes all the most fantastic offers - which I will bet that we don't need - and don't even will be happy about, because we buy in a 'good-offers-daze', from which we will wake up, when we come home having spent a lot of money, we didn't intend, when we left.

I have three suggestions:
  1. Either you buy all birthday presents for birthdays, which come during the next two months.
  2. Or you buy all Christmas presents, and then don't buy any in December.
  3. Or you buy something, which you have needed for a long time, because it now is worn out.
All other purchases - forget about them! Nobody will miss anything. There will be sales again in January, and offers in February, and in March, and... for ever! We will not miss anything ever, even though we might not buy anything next Friday.

What I am going to buy? I will go shopping for food for two days on Thursdag, and then I will stay at home watching a movie on Friday.

Afhændelse af designerting - Selling My Designer Stuff

Rigtig god weekend!

Bare et par eksempler - Just a couple of examples

I have always had an 'allergy' against big logos. I just cannot wear a t-shirt, where the decoration is an Armani logo or like wise, which makes me a walking advertising sign.

I don't want to own a Vuitton monogram bag, even though Vuitton makes good things, which last so long, that you can pass them on to the next generation. I actually own a Vuitton bag in black epi leather with a discret embossed logo. You don't see that, so that's ok. But when things begin yelling out loud, I'am off.

But why I am selling my designer things?

Because I feel deadlocked of all the things, which I have bought and been given through time. It is Georg Jensen Christmas ornaments, candle stick holders, jugs etc. Kaj Bojesen wood figures, Eames birds. Lyngby vases. All quite expensive products produced in a steady stream. Just think about how much money which is tied up in these product!

When we cut to the bone, all these things are just massed produced stuff from China. Furthermore a lot of them are new productions of things which were new 70 years ago. Nothing wrong about that, but no matter how you look at it, they are not the real thing. They are copies!

I will much rather own an old no-name vase, which belonged to my Grandmother, or an old pharmacist bottle for flowers, than I want to have a vase, everybody else have.

I don't want to own it anymore, so I am selling everything. It started out slowly about 1½ year ago, but I have only recently found out, why I don't want to have these things anymore.

They are not personal. They show nothing about, who I am, even though they take up space in my home. They just show the present trend - and last year's trend, which will be a new trend next year.

Have a great weekend!

Interview i avisen - Interview in the Newspaper

Vores lokale avis, Herlev Bladet, har været her og besøge mig. Det kom i stand, da jeg importerede The Minimalists film 'A Documentary about The Important Things' og viste den for første gang i Danmark.

Our local newspaper, Herlev Bladet, has visited me. During the summer I imported the film A Documentary about The Important Things made by The Minimalists, and I showed it for the first time here in Denmark.

At the same event I made a talk, and after the film was shown, there were many questions. It is nice to see the interest for a simple life is growing, and I plan to make more talks some time early next year.

The interview was featured in the montly appendix called 'Living', and it is always interesting to see, if a journalist writes, what you tell, and in this case I am really impressed. Joergen Nielsen only took very few notes, and yet he has quoted me to the word. It is wonderful meeting talented people.

Ind- og udlisten - The In and Out List

Sandaler - for høje hæle.
Sotherby's autionskatalog over Jacqline Kennedy's Estate - se ovenfor
Sotherby's autionskatalog over Kathrine Hepburn's Estate - se ovenfor

This time it is a long list, because many things have gone out! Why it has become like that, I cannot really answer. That's just the way it is. Things have been replaced with others, and new things have entered the house.
Things gone out:

An exercise band - a thin one a physio therapist once gave me
Track pants - the fit is not 'my' fit!
A magazine holder
A box with excess sewing materials
A cosmetics bag
Fittings for curtains
Poster print of Copenhagen
Crayons - the kind you get on a gasoline station for the kids
Thermo bottle - I bought a new (and better) one earlier this year
2 books - I have some already with the same subjects
A candle stick holder, Cobra from Georg Jensen - I am selling my design icon stuff*
A vase - Cocoon - same reason*
A vase - Lyngby - same reason*
Season candle stick holder from Georg Jensen - same reason*
Black leather bag - have bought one with can be used summer and winter
Sandals - too high heels
Cap - don't wear caps much
Home shoes - big and fluffy. Difficult to drag with you
Boots - very nice, but they made one toe go numb!
3 Auction catalogues from Sotherby's - 2 about the Kennedy Estates, and one about Katharine Hepburn.

On the in side there are a couple of replacements

A wood diswasher brush - needed a new one
A bottle rinser - didn't have one
A French coffee maker - after long consideration I bought one **
A pot - one, as you already know - was ruined
A leather messenger bag replacing the black leather bag

* I will come back to these things in a couple of days

** I have a Nespresso machine, which I like very much, and I know that the company recycle the capsules. This is all very well, but it is also expensive. So I decided, that I on normal days have the time to make 'slower' coffee, and if not then I have the machine. It is also nice, if somebody pops in for a quick cup of coffee. So I will not dispose of it, I will just use it with more consideration.

It was quite a lot, which I feel great about having cleaned out.

Jul og økonomi - Christmas and Economy

Gaver
Mad
Nyt tøj (hvis absolut nødvendigt)
Rejse (hvis man skal besøge familie)
Pynt
Slik, kager m.v.
Deltagelse i forskellige arrangementer

The Christmas calendar, which now is being injoyed by 2nd generation

Maaan, this is boring! But it is necessary! And it cannot be said loud or clear enough...

GET THAT CHRISTMAS BUDGET GOING!

Decide, how much money you want to spend on:
Presents
Food
New Clothes (if absolutely necessary)
Travel (if you visit family)
Decorations
Christmas candy and all sorts of goodies
Participation in different events.

If this budget is too high, for what you can afford, then you have to start  disselecting! It is as simple as that!

Because it will not be a good Christmas, if January, February and March (maybe longer) will send the economy down the drain.

So cut, if ends don't meet, and if it means smaller presents, then so be it. Of course you want to give nice presents, but maybe you can do with less. Or rather you can easily do with less. It is a gigantic misunderstanding which have been beaten into our heads from smart advertising, that we all should have presents for hundreds of Dollars, Kroner or Yen, and that it will make us happier. That is a sick attitude to a holiday.

Suggest to the family, that you get together buying presents for the children. There will be fewer presents, but it could become better ones - and the little dear ones probably already have almost everything.
Suggest to drop presents between adults, and if that is totally out of the question, then a present could be an invitation for a homemade dinner in January, when all the fun is over. Or babysitting a child, or help to paint a wall. And lots of other thing, which does not cost money, but effort.
Let Christmas dinner be a potluck.
Bring homemade cookies (or something else, if you have creative talents) as a present for the hostess/host instead of buying expensive flowers and wine. And it is so much fun to get something genuine.

Think out of the box. There are 1000 of ways to make Christmas cheaper, and it is (hopefully) not, what we buy, which defines Christmas!

It is called a celebration. Not a shopping event.

Enkel vedligeholdelse - Simple Maintenance

One of the (many) good things, which comes from living a simple life, has for me been, that I take better care of my things.

Previously I bought new stuff, when something was damaged, or if it looked worn, but now I have time to repair and shine up the things, which need it.

When I write 'take care of', I actually mean, that I have both the time and the energy to do something to the things I own, so that they will last longer. That is comsumption wise as well as thinking of the environment a good thing, and it incites me to buy better things, because I get the feeling that all my things are my favorite things. I don't have to buy new stuff, because I have everything, I need, and because everything is functioning well for me.

My last repair projekt was a pale blue shirt, which I like very much, but it had been torn at the cuff, and after a minor repair it is like new again.

Next project will be my black shoes, which need a bit of new color. I did that last year, and they became like new - and now they are on their 3rd year!

Første juleblog post! - First Christmas Blog Post!

Selv julen!

For et år siden - A year ago

An earlier blog made me think of, that I have to prepare the Christmas-blogs now. But it isn't going to be blogs about all the things, you can do during December. On the contrary.

I cannot support a Christmas,

  • which brings the first part of the year- maybe more - to be spent in financial ruins
  • filled with tranditions, which we have outgrown
  • which is spent with people, who do not bring us anything good
  • where you take part in every event and are busy all the time
  • which is over in an instant due to stress.

I want everybody to plan a relaxed Christmas. A conscious Christmas,

  • which does not blow the economy off track
  • which will be filled with people, we care about, and who care about us
  • which will be filled with good experiences
  • with time to relax
  • which is all about being close and together.

It should be a Christmas, where we say yes to everything, we participate in. And no to everything, which do not add value anymore (even though it has been a tradition for years). Sometimes it is necessary to take things into consideration. Even Christmas!

For en sikkerheds skyld - Just in Case

I don't know about you, but when I buy something new, I always want to make order in the space, where my new 'thing' is going to be.

That also happened last Saturday, when I bought my new pot. So when I was washing the space, I found a lid from and old pot, which I had to let go some time ago, but I had obviously not been aware about that lid. In other words two lids too many.

There is no reason to keep them. I have through all my years being in my kitchen daily not ruined a lid to a pot, and these are exactly the kind of things, which takes op space. Two lids just rumbling around as a security for something, which isn't likely going to happen.

We cannot and should not guard ourselves against everything, and the probablity that the stuff we keep for 'just in case' ever is going to get in action again, is negligible.

3 for 2's pris - 3 for the price of 2

Den gamle gryde - The old pot

and the new one, if anyone should be in any doubts.

One of my pots bobbled up in the bottom. I haven't experienced that before, but it was quite an old pot, so I guess that it was time for a new one.

So I went pot-hunting. It should be a stainless steel all-round pot, medium size without teflon or other suspicious stuff. That couldn't be so hard. Or at least that was what I thought.

When I finally decided for a specific pot, the shop guy showed me an offer. I could actually get 3 pots by paying only the forth part more than the price of my pot! And that is really tempting, because you get 'more' for your money.

But this 'more' is also something, that you don't need.

I already have the pots, I need, and I chose to buy the top quality pot, and even though the price was high compared to the offer, I still saved the extra forth of the amount to pay for the 3 pots - and I didn't become the owner of 2 pots, which aren't being used and just take up cabinet space.

So by choosing the 'expensive' solution I paid less and avoided taking home something, which wasn't necessary.

A good offer might not always be a good offer, if you look at it from all angles.

Før julemåneden tager magten - Before Christmas takes the Power

Now I am getting just as unbearable as all the Christmas advertisements - but only to prevent to get run over by the bustle of December.

Because one of my previous blog post made me think, that before Christmas you should start with a break. Start thinking about, how the ideal Christmas looks like in your head. And then think about how much or how little it looked like the Christmas last year. Find out, what can be done better.

You can also begin to go through the Christmas decorations and the ornaments. Get the box/the boxes and see, if anything should be replaced, repaired, if you have to buy new light bulbs etc. Going though the boxes you can also see, if you have left over paper, greeting cards and other things from last year. Then you have to invest less this year. Use what you have got.

If some of the decorations need replacements, then plan a family trip with sandwiches and hot cocoa in the thermo bottles later in the month to pick up things from nature, which can be made into Christmas decorations. It could be material for wreaths, which you can decorate, or beautiful branches. Smal children can easily join in on this.

Afterwards the decorations are easy to get rid of, in opposition to something which you have invested (a lot of) money in, and isn't 'in' next year. And there will be nothing left to take up space in the Christmas boxes for the next year.

Talk with everybody about, what they think are the ultimate best things about Christmas (apart from presents). Things they want to do more of this year and plan ahead to see, what is possible to do.

The things, which makes Christmas better, might not be something, which you have to buy.

Det er jul! ... - It is Christmas! Or...

Luckily, smallest favorite person doesn't care - for him it is still Autumn, and he made a table decoration

It's Christmas... Or isn't it?

I went down to our local mall, because I wanted to buy a small ghost, which I had seen earlier, for the smallest favorite person. And I couldn't find the Halloween stuff!

But I found the Christmans stuff!

I asked a nice shop girl, who was looking around with me, and we still couldn't find anything. So she called a colleague, who told, that it was all moved out in the marketplace, because the season was over, so they had to sell out!

AT THAT POINT THERE WERE 10 DAYS TO HALLOWEEN - AND CHRISTMAS IS ALREADY MARKETED!

Next round - before Christmas - is Black Friday, which like Halloween is just another 'tradition', which isn't Danish, but one the advertising industry has adopted.

What can we keep buying, which we haven't already got? I don't understand this! There are somebody, who is trying to make us believe, that we need more. When what we actually need is less and better!

Merry Christmas!

Min indendørs urtehave - My Indoor Herb Garden

Today is wait time, and tomorrow I will tell you, what we are waiting for!

So I will share my litte herb garden with you. Yesterday I felt like cooking Italian food, and the favorite family came to dinner, and they loved it.

It was lemon-thyme chicken with small tomatoes in cream sauce with a dash of basil. Served with fresh pasta, or course. Very good, if I may say so myself, and not much was left. It is also very easy to make. Simple and good.

So I had to buy fresh herbs, everything becomes so much better that way, and now they are in the pot together with my mint plant, which has grown like mad.

Tasker til en minimalist! - Bags for a Minimalist!

Rigtig god weekend!

Den 'fjollede' - The 'silly' one

Man går aldrig galt i byen ved at købe god mad! - Blåskimmel ost og lækre oliven
You never go wrong buying good feed! - Blue cheese and yummy olives

How does a minimalist reward herself/himself? Good question. Normally with a piece of chocolate! But I had actually promised myself a gift - a reward  for a 'mission accomplished' - and last Saturday was the day.

When I stood there with my reward in my hands, I felt, that I needed to think a bit more. So I didn't buy it, and that os one of two things, which I have noticed during this year:

I don't browse around anymore, and I don't miss it. I shop food and cleaning products, and if something breakes, I replace it - if I don't have anything, I can use instead. Boring you might think, but for me it is liberating.

Second - I think a lot, before I buying something, which will become an 'addition' to my belongings.

But I want a small black everyday bag. Right now I have a turquoise one with fringes, which I bought in Spain a couple a years ago, and I love it, but it looks a bit silly here in Autumn. It is a summer bag, but it works so well for me. It has the rigtht size, it has compartments inside (love compartments), and is so wonderful to touch. I actually considered having it colored, but that's stupid too, because then I don't have it next summer, when I don't want to 'do' black anymore.

I have 4 bags: An 11 year old Vuitton Noé black epi (it's my big bag, which can contain 'everything', and I will never part with it), a brown computer bag, the turquoise 'silly' one, and a party bag, which is a small vintage Mandarina Duck Tank bag.

On top of that I have 2 photo bags (a big one with room for lenses, a sandwich and my water bottle, and a small one for my camera only), a trolley and a suitcase.

These bags cover all my needs, so a new one will become an 'addition'.

But the turquoise one screams against the sky now with all the light going, and it tricks my color perception, so it will  probably become worse, when winter is here! So maybe - maybe I will buy the black bag anyway.

But I bought something... :-)
Have a great weekend!
